Lire, c’est boire et manger. L’esprit qui ne lit pas maigrit comme le corps qui ne mange pas.

WHO WE ARE

Our French department has 17 teachers who teach in general education classes (7G – 1G) and in international education classes (A1 – C1 of the CEFR for languages/ IGCSEAS and A Level).

Luxembourg is characterised by its plurilingualism and the French teachers at ISML are well aware this. They therefore try to teach their pupils that French, like Luxemburgish and German, the other two official languages, plays a key role in their academic, professional and personal development. They do not always realise that learning French is a real opportunity to access, for example, the labour market more easily.

Consequently, the challenge for ISML teachers does not lie solely in learning this language, but above all in promoting its culture in order to enable students to open up to it and to others with the aim of enriching themselves.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

The pedagogical approach to learning French of ISML teachers focuses on activities that promote student creativity such as reading or writing contests, and field trips to the theatre or cinema. The goal is to participate in an entertaining activity or simply to give free rein to their imagination. Every year contemporary French authors and writers are invited to our school. This is a highlight in the life of the school because the prospect of this meeting gives a boost to the dynamics of the class. The students do not only discover and deepen their knowledge of a literary work and its artistic universe, but it is above all an opportunity for them to be made aware of the creative and human dimension of a person they will have the chance to meet.

WHAT WE OFFER

The French department is located on the first floor of wing 7000. All language classrooms are equipped with an overhead projector, an OMLT and a video broadcasting system (Apple TV). Some of grade 4 students and, since September 2020, all of the grade 7 students are equipped with an iPad.
The French department also has a reading room located on the 1st floor of the 7000 wing. In order to help our students improve their spelling in an online playful way, our school participates in the Projet Voltaire. Thanks to this application, students benefit from an intelligent online account that will use their individual mistakes to suggest a program and exercises tailored to their needs. In this way, they will be able to improve their spelling at their own pace and witness their learning through accurate statistics that will indicate their progress.
